May 27, 2024 - Vancouver & Happy Memorial Day

We were up and adam and off the ship by 9:30 am. We had the day in Vancouver because our flight wasn’t until 11:40 pm. We visited Vancouver 2 years ago, so we didn’t really want to tour around, especially since we had our luggage to deal with - a lot of luggage. Fortunately, last week Andy remembered that we had a voucher for a free whale watching tour because when we were here before we did a tour but didn’t see any whales. We called the Prince of Whales tours, and yes we could go on a tour for free, and yes, they would store our luggage, and yes they had an opening that fit our schedule. From the pier we took a taxi to the tour shop on Granville Island.

As promised they stored our bags and we spent the morning exploring. The island has a large market and streets of cute shops and artists studios. We found a neat Canadian made piece of pottery - a salsa dish shaped like a canoe. At 2:30 we boarded our whale watching boat and cast off.

Our main reason for taking a whale watching tour was that it was a place to kill time, and we already saw whales on the cruise so we thought seeing whales at this point wouldn’t be as exciting. But were we wrong, within 15 minutes they spotted a grey whale. Then the captain headed towards a pod of orcas. We watched the orcas, a pod of 5, for almost an hour! Then seals and sea lions on a rock barked and growled as we watched them. As we headed back we spotted 2, then 4, then 6, at one point 8 humpback whales swimming, diving and splashing. It was incredible!

Wonderful trip, but we’re excited to be home!!!
