April 16, 2024. - Goodbye Texas
Waco Texas, 8:37 am, another loud, low, rocket rumble rattles the camper and lasts about 2 minutes. We heard these rumbles last evening too. A quick google search told us that Space X has a test facility near Waco. I would be very upset about this if I lived in Waco.
Our last Texas stop was Dallas. The Trinity Skyline Bike Trail runs next to the Trinity River. The entire area seems somewhat neglected and we had to try a few spots to get sufficient parking, not because it was crowded, but because there weren’t any parking lots at the trail heads. We rode down into the trail at the Skyline Overlook. The weather was in the low 80s and the wind was fairly stiff at times especially on the ride back to the camper. The trail is very quiet, we only saw a few other people. Kind of odd.

The river isn’t big, but is surrounded by a large area of grassy meadow/marshlands. The entire area is lower than the city and numerous bridges pass over it. The paved bike trail is in this sunken meadow or I guess it might be called bottomlands. Unlike other city bike trails this trail is very removed from nearby Dallas. It was different and probably our least favorite trail. Great for riding, but not much to look at.

After our ride we found parking near the Kennedy memorial. We explored the grassy knoll, walked around the building and read the signs about the assignation. The stark, square cement memorial with the empty statue pedestal was chilling, even now all these years later.

Tonight we are at Hot Springs Gulpa Gorge campground. Have to love the lifetime senior pass 1/2 price campground fee!
After a trip like this, when the truck is headed home, our instincts are to drive as long and as hard as we can to get there. Like a horse to the barn at night. This trip we are trying to slow down and enjoy the return trip. Good Night!
