Day 7 - Kouchibouguac National Park

August 6, 2024

Today we explored Kouchibouguac National Park. After a relaxing morning getting settled at the campsite we headed to the visitors center. We should have ask how to pronounce Kouchibouguac but we forgot. We did ask about biking and kayaking and discovered that there’s a bike trail around the park and multiple options for kayaking.

After lunch and a little mid vacation laundry swap (put the dirty clothes in a bin in the bed of the pickup and replenish clothes from a suitcase), we headed out for a 14 plus mile bike trip around the park. Nice trail, wide small stone packed pea gravel path way. It had good signs with distances at intersections. The path went by some board walks where we got off the bikes and looked at the grassy wetlands at the sea’s edge. The park is full but not crowded, we only passed and got passed by a few bicycles on the entire ride. The weather was warm and pleasant mid 70s. We found the iconic red chairs, a thing at all Canadian National Parks

We rested and FaceTimed with Owen and Hailey before heading out to the only dinner option where someone else besides us cooked. We rode our bikes to the beach snack shop that has hamburgers and hotdogs, fries, onion rings, and chicken fingers. And of coarse it wouldn’t be Canada without poutine on the menu! A little visitor appeared all too comfortable eating dropped food on a close by deck rail.

After dinner we took a stroll on the sand spit/barrier island. On the map they call it a dune, but it’s not what we from the Great Lakes area would call a dune. There is a long foot bridge over the marshy tidal area to the “dune”.

We ended the day with a little ride in the car in search of an elusive moose. We spotted a deer and a bunny, but no moose. Star gazing back at the campsite we saw a starlink launch pass overhead. Neat to see, but kind of looks like space garbage.

Hi Cathy and Andy...this post brought back some wonderful memories, especially of the bike trail. As far as the pronunciation goes, it's koochuh boo quack (like a duck!) with the accent on the quack!
