Day 5 - A Foggy Sea

We left Iqaluit 2 days ago and sailed north through the Davis Strait. We are now officially in Baffin Bay. Not being able to start in Pond Inlet has added "at sea" days to the trip, but the expedition team has assured us that once we get up along the coast of Devon Island there will be lots to see and do. We are still sailing through heavy fog. We had our first sighting of baby ice bergs today at dinner. The map below shows where we've been (black circles) and where we are headed (white circles).

The big hope for today was for the fog to lift so we could do zodiac tours to look for polar bears and seals. That did not happen. Michael, the expedition team coordinator, explained that the fog was too thick, and the swells too high to get people safely in and out of the zodiacs.

This morning, we got up and shook off the dust with a lovely breakfast of pancakes and a workout at the fitness center.

We spent the rest of the day wondered the upper decks. We found the walking/running track and enjoyed some fresh Arctic air as we walked 10 laps (about a mile). The weather is cool enough to require coats, hats and gloves.

Two of the on board presentations caught our interest, one on knot tying and one about the history of kayaking. I included a picture from one of the slides from the kayak presentation because the children in the buckets practicing kayaking look so cute.

Dinner was smart casual! We ended the day with trivia games in the lounge.
