Tomorrow we start the trek home. We’ll try and hit some interesting spots and maybe get a bike ride in, but mostly we drive and boon dock.
Today, we got up early and headed for another parking spot by a carriage road trail head. This time we went to the Hulls Cove Visitors Center so we could explore a different section of the carriage trails. The bike ride was beautiful and thankfully not quite as steep as yesterday’s ride. We passed ponds and circled Eagle Lake. We also had some nice ocean views.
After our ride we headed south east. We stopped at the first Walmart we saw and stocked up on lunch supplies, snacks and bottled water. While the water we put in the camper holding tank is fine for washing and flushing, we don’t drink it.
Our first frolicking detour was Fort Knox near the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. Andy spotted the brown historic place sign and it was a great choice. It’s not the military base Fort Knox, that one is in Kentucky. This Fort Knox was built in the mid 1800’s by the relatively new United States to protect against invasion from European countries. It is part of a chain of forts built up and down the coast. It never came under attack so it is well preserved. The winding staircases and narrow passageways were fun to explore.
We camped at Camden Hills State Park. The campground is at the base of Mt. Battie. We drove to the observation area for a beautiful view to the south. The campground was nice and wooded, but otherwise, not great. The hiking trails weren’t great, we paid an up charge for WiFi that didn’t work and we were told not to fill out water tank because they were on a boil water alert. Disappointing because we’re were hoping to top off the tank for our trek home.
The cute town of Camden, just outside the park made it worth the stop. We had a good dinner at the Sea Dog Brewery then walked around the shops and harbour. On our way back to the car we heard live music playing. We found the source of the music at a lovely little harbour side park. Locals and tourists were enjoying the show so we found seats on a stone wall and did the same.
