Day 12 - Fundy to Acadia

August 11, 2024

Tides are a mystery to me. Something to do with the moon. We explored a beach this morning that by this evening will be covered in feet of water. It was interesting and a little surreal. By the end of the day, the cliffs and waterfalls we were viewing and climbing over would be submerged in feet of sea water. It was fascinating. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tidal changes in the world. The water raises an average of 47 feet. While interesting, I’m very glad the Great Lakes don’t have tides. I guess I like knowing that the water is going to be where I expect it to be. The exposed landscape was surprisingly barren, the only sea life we spotted were some small snails hanging onto rocks waiting for the water to return. A few years ago we explored a tidal pool on the Pacific coast and saw starfish and sea urchins.

Before leaving Fundy National Park we stopped at a lake “beach” pullout. It was up in the higher part of the park on a little lake. The beach was small and crowded, probably because the water by the sea was 1/2 mile from the shore. We didn’t stop for the beach, Andy popped into the camper for a little nap and a cup of coffee and I took a short hike around the pretty lake. Seeing the small, crowded lake made me thankful I live in Michigan where we have miles of fresh water beaches.

We spent the afternoon driving to Acadia National Park. We are staying in Blackwoods campground. It is more crowded than the parks we have visited so far on this trip, but the sites are large and wooded. The internet is the worst we’ve had, which is both surprising because we were in some remote parts of Canada, and not surprising because it seems like the US national parks often have poor internet service. We picked this campground because it looked like it was close to the famed Acadia carriage roads. The roads are now biking and hiking trails through the park. Unfortunately, there is no access to the carriage roads from the campground. Tomorrow we have to take the bikes in the truck to one of the access points and try and get one of the limited parking spots so we can ride the carriages roads. Stay tuned!

After a quick dinner in the camper and needing to get the kinks out after a long drive, we took an evening bike ride around the campground.
