Today we saw some walruses. Wow, what a unique animal. They were in the water moving and splashing. Their big tusks clearly visible. We were in Cuming Inlet and saw the walrus from the zodiac boats on our way to an on shore excursion. We could also see the walrus from the shore. The small peninsula we were allowed to explore was both rocky and boggy. There was more vegetation than I expected. We enjoyed some Arctic sunshine today.
We sailed from Cuming Inlet to Croker Bay in the afternoon. We had stunning views of two spectacular glaciers. Hugh ice bergs were floating away from the glaciers into the sea. It was too windy for a zodiac tour, but the sun was shining and we could see the glaciers beautifully from our balconies.
With the glaciers for a backdrop, we ordered snacks from room service, enjoyed the sunshine and watched nutty people take the polar plunge from a zodiac next to the ship. We could see all the fun from Andy's balcony. Forty people took the plunge, including our UP neighbors, Steve and Shannon, who have joined us on this adventure. We passed on the plunge.
If you've been wondering, here's how they get the zodiac's on and off the ship. For reference, they fit 12 guests and a driver on the zodiacs
We had one setback to our adventuring spirits. Yesterday evening, on our anniversary, Andy tested positive for Covid He has a slight cough and was very shaky after the long zodiac tour yesterday afternoon. We had tests with us, he was positive. We notified the cruise medical personnel, they came and tested us both, I was negative, but Andy was definitely positive. They offered me a suite across the hall, which I accepted. We decided we would both sleep better separately. Andy is tired and has a cough and slight fever. The ships medical staff are checking on him every morning. Unfortunately, he has to quarantine for 5 days, basically until the end of the cruise. Fortunately, I can go in and out of his room as I please, they just encourage us to wear masks. We are taking advantage of the balcony.
We figure he must have caught it on the cruise, on the charter plane, or in the hotel in Iqaluit. Either way, he's probably not the only one on the ship with COVID. I'm masking for the rest of the trip.
Super windy tonight!
