This morning we rode the Homestead Trail. While it didn’t feature the rugged red cliffs, it had a quiet beauty that was just as spectacular. We traveled through woods, and past farms. The trail was lined with wild flowers, fields of Queen Anne’s Lace and sow bean crops. Quiet ponds and marshes added additional scope for the imagination. The informational signs at the Green Gables visitors center talk about Lucy Maud Montgomery’s love of nature. It’s not surprising she could write so many wonderful story’s filled with simple beauty while living on PEI.
A note from a city girl, the farms we were riding around were real working farms, not just there for the tourists. We came around one corner and a large farm machine was in the field before us. It was eating up grass and plop, it pooped out a giant roll of hay. I’ve seen these bales of hay, but never the hay pooping machine.
Another note, thanks to the iPhone photo Ai search thingy, we were able to identify the soy bean plants. Snap a picture of the plant, open it, and select the little i icon. Very cool.
We walked on the beach after lunch. We started at the beach by the Cavendish Campground and walked south to where the beach gives way to the red cliffs. We climbed on the cliffs for a bit and noticed the sky darkening so we headed back.
We visited the site of Lucy Maud Montgomery‘s childhood home. The house is gone, but the foundation and grounds are still there. The site is not part of the national park, but nicely done with a statue commemorating Canada’s famous author. Green Gables shows where the fictional Anne lived, this site shows where her creator was inspired.
Our rainy afternoon option was a trip to the Canadian Potato Museum & Antique Farm Machinery Museum. The exhibit in the picture below is about the different diseases potato’s can get, we examined the sickly potatoes for a few minutes before noticing that they were displayed in tiny potato coffins. Someone at the museum has a sense of humor.
We enjoyed the museum and had dinner at the cafe. Baked potatoes with a side of potato chips. We each had chili with our potatoes.
We head to Fundy National Park tomorrow then to Acadia National Park. We shortened our trip a bit, we were supposed to travel up into Cape Briton NS, but we’ve decided we’d like more time in Acadia and less in the car.
