Day 1 - Travel Day

We're off, on our way to the Toronto Airport. When we began planning this adventure we discovered that while you can't fly direct from Detroit Metro to Dublin, you can from Toronto. And it was cheaper. So, we're leaving from Toronto tonight. It's an easy drive from home to Toronto, about 3 1/2 hrs.

I like the anticipation of a vacation. I like planning our route and learning about the places we will to visit. We began making our trip plans this past winter. We looked at a cruise around Ireland, but decided on renting a camper van once we discovered it was an option. After reserving a Areo camper from Bunk Camper rentals in Dublin, we started planning our path the Irish countryside.

I like to read, so for me getting to know the places we'll visit with a good book is a great way to prepare for an adventure. I read Trinity by Leon Uris and The Princes of Ireland by Edward Rutherfurd. Both great novels about Ireland, its people and its history. We're visiting many of the places Rutherfurd describes in his book.

Packing, Andy is a light packer. Taking exactly what he'll need, and no more. Me, not so much. I probably have too much. For this trip we allowed ourselves a couple checked bags (included with our tickets) because we'll be traveling around in the camper van. On other trips to Europe, we traveled with only a carryon and backpack each because we were on and off trains as we explored. We decided on light sleeping bags for in the camper. They fit in our big carryon. We each have Lowa waterproof hiking boots and I have Columbia waterproof shoes (I can't stand it if my feet get wet). And we have rain gear, good jackets and rain pants. Not that it ever rains in Ireland.

We're at the terminal and ready to board - in an hour and a half. Time to get a book out. Just received a notice of a two hour delay! Fingers crossed that it will be less, and not longer.
